Living Web Sites

by Karl Knelson
Site Mechanix

Is your web site alive? Take a moment and check it's pulse. Do you feel anything? Maybe it died?

There are millions of web sites on the internet and most of them are dead. They haven't been updated since 2005 or even longer. Or worse the owner forgot to renew hosting or the domain registration itself.

Gone are the days of just having a web site. That is not enough any more. Your web site needs to be dynamic and changing all the time. This means that at least the home page needs to be changed every other day or at least once a week.

Currently, are you able to update your web site yourself?
If not, consider looking into using a blog as your web site. Many web owners do. The reason is because a blog is a content management system and they are very easy to use.

That is why blogs are rising to the surface. They update their home pages with something new almost everyday. But what else do they do, they trade links with each other.

Bloggers simply login to their administration area of their web site and add stuff. They don't need to know HTML and they don't need to hire someone to do it for them, however some busy web owners do.

Blogs are also topical. The best strategy is to talk about your industry. This gives you the chance to get found by way of content.

Create Buzz
With all the advances in social technology you need to become more involved. Otherwise nobody will know you are there. Blogs, YouTube videos, Facebook pages, Linked In profiles and MySpace pages just to name a few are examples of interactive social networking in a virtual world. Plus, these are high ranking sites that you can interact with and build links back to your web site.

My advice: "join everything and spill your guts..." Let everyone know who you are and what you are selling.

If you don't take the time to learn how to use these tools you may be missing out on a fun and efficient way to do business.

Now it is even easier to meet people all over the world and establish virtual relationships. This strategy helps you get past gatekeepers and gain paths to resources that you need for your business.

So part of this equation is to get involved in a virtual world and start commanding the technnology. Let them know that you are alive and kicking.

All links should go back to your web site which could be considered your base of operations.

Lets take a look at your Base of Operations. Is it Fresh? Have you added anything of yourself to this living document? A joke, a photo or some commentary?

Show your human side. People are more likely to do business with those who they have things in common with.

Got video?
No? Why not? This technology is very affordable and easy to use. There are many services available that make it easy for you to post videos either in blogs or landing pages.

Can users participate on your web site? Perhaps you could add a short survey on your web site. How about a fun game? Many of these items can be plugged into existing web pages by way of web widgets.

Widgets are little applications that can be viewed on your site but are served from somewhere else.

This stuff is still fairly new so don't feel like you are years behind just yet. But I wouldn't wait too long.
